2018 IIHS Top Safety Picks
When it comes to evaluating vehicle safety, two awards to look out for are the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick award and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 5-Star Overall Safety Score. For 2018, Nissan vehicles excelled across the board, with numerous vehicles earning a 2018 IIHS Top Safety Pick award. The following vehicles have all been honored with such an award: the Nissan Kicks, Sentra, Altima, Maxima, and Rogue.
To be named to the elite 2018 Top Safety Pick list, these Nissan vehicles had to undergo rigorous safety testing. “A vehicle must earn good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It also must earn an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention and an acceptable or good headlight rating,” the IIHS explains. The evaluation includes crash, strength, restraint, and other tests, providing a comprehensive review that you can trust.
To qualify for their awards, all six of the Nissan vehicles must be equipped with specific headlights, as the evaluation includes a headlight rating. Additionally, the Sentra must come equipped with its optional front crash prevention technology.
On top of these impressive awards, Nissan vehicles offer state-of-the-art safety and driver-assist technologies. As part of Nissan’s larger Nissan Intelligent Mobility initiative, Nissan has developed Nissan Safety Shield 360°, which is an advanced suite of active safety technologies currently being implemented in Nissan’s top-selling models.
It first became available on the 2019 Altima and 2019 Rogue this past fall. The suite includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Automatic Braking, and High Beam Assist. By 2021, Nissan plans to make Safety Shield 360° standard on all its top-selling models.
Although the Kicks, Sentra, Altima, Maxima, and Rogue already excel when it comes to safety, they’re about to get even smarter. Check them out at Nissan of Melbourne.
